Attic Beats 001 - Old School Hip-Hop

Attic Beats 001 - Recorded July 26, 2005

The debut episode of Attic Beats focuses on old school hip-hop. “Old school” is a term that means different things to different people… video shows that play “old school” seem to think that something from ‘99 would qualify. Not quite. Some consider ‘94 old school, others ‘84. I use it to describe any pre-1990 hip-hop, and that’s what’s featured on this show.

Some technical glitches are still being ironed out, but I had a lot of fun doing this first episode and look forward to the next one. Drop a line in the comments and let me know what you think.

(I’m concealing the playlist so that it only shows up on the full entry for this show. I always prefer to listen to a mix or radio show without knowing what’s coming next and then checking back to see the playlist afterwards. So read ahead if you want, otherwise, listen and then check out the rundown.)

Welcome to Attic Beats

Posted on Wednesday 20 July 2005

Weclome to atticbeats.com, the home of the Attic Beats podcast. Yes, I totally jacked the design, but I wanted to focus more on getting the first edition ready rather than battling with CSS. I don’t know exactly when show #1 will air, but I’m hoping to have something in the next week or so.

A little backstory: during my college years (1994-1998), I was really involved with our campus radio station. I have almost my entire freshman year’s worth of shows on cassette. My sophomore year, I had two three hour blocks each week. For part of my junior and senior years, I was the GM of the station. And I still maintain the station’s web site and return to do a guest show every year or two. I’m one of those guys that can’t let go.

And I guess the main reason is that I just enjoy doing it. I miss having a three hour block of time to spend doing nothing but spinning music I love and sharing it with the few people that listen. Attic Beats is an attempt to get a little piece of that back into my life.

I won’t be doing three-hour shows. I’m not even committing to a weekly schedule. But I am planning on getting back into the swing, spinning some music you probably haven’t heard before and maybe a few other things along the way. I’m shooting for a 30-minute show every week or so. Just subscribe to the site’s feed in your favorite podcasting client or your RSS reader. Each week along with the audio of the show, I’ll post a playlist, links, and a little commentary.

So, for now, hang tight while I get things prepped for the first show.
